| About Me
I started to learn Italic handwriting at the age of eight and later achieved top grades in calligraphy at both GCE O and A level. My expressive work has led to several one man shows and mixed shows in England and France (Paris). I was part of the West Midlands Crafts Open Exhibitions in 1991 and 1992.
I turned freelance in 1978 and have undertaken work for various well known companies and societies such as NatWest Bank, MacDonald’s, the Royal College of Surgeons, the City of Birmingham, Vauxhall Cars, Land Rover, Barclays Bank, South Birmingham Health Authority and The Royal Society of Arts. My work is in private collections all over the world. I have been teaching calligraphy at various education centres in Birmingham and the West Midlands since 1981 and I'min much demand to teach one-day workshops. I was nominated for the Adult Tutor Awards 2000, and in March 2001 I won first prize in the 20-49 category of the World Handwriting Achievement Contest. I also contributed to the SIH book, "A Dance of the Pen: Celebrating Fifty Years of the Society for Italic Handwriting 1952-2002", published in 2002. I have been Chairman of the Birmingham Calligraphy Society since it was founded in 1987. I also edit the magazine of The Society for Italic Handwriting (SIH), winning their annual handwriting competition in 1987. I became Secretary of the SIH in 1995. I have appeared several times on radio and national television to talk about handwriting and calligraphy. Programmes include Today (BBC Radio 4) and The Big Breakfast (Channel 4).
